arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2009.04125 The original Venus Express mission was planned to last no more than 500 Earth days, but the mission was extended five times: to May 2009, to December 2009, to December 2012, to 2014 and finally to 2015. The planet’s orbital period is 224.65 days, which means that a year on Venus is 61.5 as long as a year on Earth. Published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society: Letters (2022). On average, Venus orbits the sun at a distance of 67.2 million miles, making it 38 million miles away from Earth. It achieved its operational orbit of about 155 × 41,000 miles (250 × 66,000 kilometers) by May 7, 2007. ZhaiĬomments: 7 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. The detection of such a large asteroid inside the orbit of Venus is surprising given their rarity according to near-Earth asteroid population models.Īs the first officially numbered and named asteroid located entirely within the orbit of Venus, we propose that the class of interior to Venus asteroids be referred to as ‘Ayló’chaxnim asteroids.īryce T. (594913) ‘Ayló’chaxnim has an aphelion distance of ~0.65 au, is ~2 km in diameter and is red in colour.

We report discovery and follow-up observations of (594913) ‘Ayló’chaxnim, an asteroid with an orbit entirely interior to Venus. Despite searches up to the end of 2019, none had been found. Near-Earth asteroid population models predict the existence of bodies located inside the orbit of Venus. The Earth-Venus-spacecraft geometry is such that the rocket firing will occur behind Venus from Earths point of view.
